Description
A quiet finger game using a loop of string to make shapes, either solo or by passing the pattern back and forth with a partner. Practises careful finger movements and following a sequence of steps.

Play guide
- 1Tie a length of string into a loop and loop it over both hands to start.
- 2Follow a simple first figure step by step, moving the string with your fingers as you go.
- 3Go slowly and let your child copy each move; repeat any step that does not catch.
- 4For the partner version, one player lifts the pattern off the other's hands to form the next shape, passing it back and forth.
- 5Keep the figures you enjoy and try a new one when ready.
Success signals
Your child follows the finger moves and forms at least one recognisable figure. They stay focused on the steps. They want to try the next figure or pass it to a partner
If it's tricky
The string tangles: Reset to the starting position and go one slow step at a time. Your child's fingers are too small to hold all the loops: Use a slightly shorter loop or start with a one-hand figure. Following steps from memory is hard: Do it alongside them so they can copy each move
