Description
Pour out a collection of blocks, stacking cups, or stackable household objects and step back. Your child constructs, topples, rebuilds, and experiments entirely on their own terms - no instructions, no goal, no adult needed.

Play guide
- 1Gather blocks, stacking cups, wooden cubes, empty boxes, or any household objects that stack safely (spice containers, plastic containers, small cardboard boxes). For children under 36 months, check each item first - anything smaller than 3cm in any dimension is a CHOKING HAZARD and must be set aside; use only large, fist-sized pieces for under-3s.
- 2Pour or arrange them loosely on the floor or a low surface. Don't demonstrate what to build.
- 3Let your child begin. If they look to you for guidance, just say "you decide what to make" and stay calm.
- 4When they knock it down - they will - that's part of the fun. No intervention needed unless they're frustrated.
Success signals
Your child builds and rebuilds independently for 15 or more minutes without needing adult direction. Your child tests how high they can stack before things fall, or tries different arrangements. Your child narrates their build or names what it is (for example, "this is a tower / house / rocket")
If it's tricky
Child can't get started: Stack two blocks yourself and step away - that's enough of a prompt without directing. Child knocks everything down immediately without building first: That's valid play; let it run and see if construction follows. Blocks keep falling and frustration builds: Check whether the surface is too soft (carpet can make stacking unstable) - a hard floor or a tray is better. Child wants you involved: Build your own separate structure nearby in parallel without competing.
