Description
Mix flour, salt, and water into a simple dough, then shape it into whatever your child imagines - animals, stars, flat tiles, beads, or free-form lumps. Leave to air-dry overnight or oven-dry with you watching.

Play guide
- 1Mix together 2 cups plain flour (contains wheat - allergen), 1 cup salt, and approximately 3/4 cup water in a bowl until a smooth dough forms. Add water slowly; the dough should not be sticky.
- 2Knead the dough briefly on a clean flat surface until it holds together. This part is good for child participation.
- 3Hand the dough to your child. Let them squeeze, roll, flatten, and shape freely - no prompts needed.
- 4If they want to make specific shapes, offer tools - a rolling pin or bottle, cookie cutters, a blunt pencil to make texture marks.
- 5When shapes are done, set them on a piece of baking paper to dry. Air-drying takes 24-48 hours. Oven-drying (parent manages entirely) - 100°C / 210°F for 2-3 hours on a baking tray, checking every 30 minutes.
- 6Once dry and cool, child can paint or decorate with markers if they want.
Success signals
Your child stays engaged with the dough for at least 5-10 minutes of free shaping. They name or describe what they've made before it goes to dry. Finished pieces hold their shape (not crumbling), showing the dough was the right consistency
If it's tricky
The dough is too sticky: Add flour a tablespoon at a time and re-knead. The dough crumbles: Add water a teaspoon at a time. Child wants to taste the dough: Explain clearly it's not for eating - the salt makes it taste very bad, which is honest and usually convincing. Decorating after drying is more appealing than shaping: Let them skip ahead; the dough can air-dry in simple flat tiles they paint later.
