Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Say and clap these three words together: cat = 1 clap, pup-py = 2 claps, ba-na-na = 3 claps.
  2. 2Say the words in a different order while the child claps the matching number each time.
  3. 3Let the child choose one new familiar word and clap it together slowly to work out whether it has one, two or three beats.

Success signals

The child hears and marks one-, two- and three-syllable words with clearly different clap counts.

If it's tricky

If syllables are difficult, stay with the three supplied words and exaggerate them slowly.
