Description
Cut a vegetable in half, pick up a leaf, or choose a small flat household object, press it into washable paint, and stamp patterns onto paper. Each stamp reveals an unexpected print.

- shallow_bowls
- stamps
- scissors
- paper
- newspaper
Play guide
- 1Prepare your stamps: cut a potato or other firm vegetable in half (parent does the cutting); collect leaves, a sponge cut into a shape, a cork, or the flat end of a bottle cap or block.
- 2Pour small amounts of washable paint into shallow bowls or onto a plate.
- 3Show your child how to press a stamp into paint and then press firmly onto paper. Lift straight up for a clean print.
- 4Let them experiment - try different stamps, different colors, different pressures, overlapping prints.
- 5After the paint dries, they can add details with markers if they want.
Success signals
Your child stamps at least three prints with deliberate color choices. They try more than one type of stamp. They make a composition (stamps arranged on the page) rather than just random marks.
If it's tricky
The stamp is sliding rather than printing cleanly: The paint may be too thin or the pressure too light - press more firmly. A vegetable stamp is too wet (released juice): Pat it briefly with a paper towel before painting. Child loses interest in stamping and starts using the paint as finger paint: Let them - both are valid. Paint pools in the crevices of a cut vegetable and the detail is lost: Cut a flatter surface or switch to a simpler object (cork, block end).
