  • An available household piano or keyboard
Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1On an available piano or keyboard at home, find a group of two black keys and a group of three together.
  2. 2One person points to a group; the other finds another group with the same pattern farther along the keyboard.
  3. 3Take turns gently playing one key in your chosen group and listening to the different pitches.

Success signals

The child recognises a repeated real keyboard pattern and connects a key press with sound.

If it's tricky

No instrument is available: use an adult-controlled online keyboard only if it is already easy to open; otherwise choose another activity rather than buying equipment.
