Description
Fill a tray or shallow container with dry rice and add cups, spoons, and small objects to hide and find. Your child scoops, pours, digs, and explores - calmly engaged while you do something else nearby.

Play guide
- 1Pour 2-4 cups of dry rice into a shallow container (a baking tray, large bowl, or storage box works). Place a towel or sheet underneath to catch spills.
- 2Add 2-3 scooping tools - measuring cups, spoons, small bowls.
- 3Hide 4-6 small objects in the rice (figurines, large beads, small toys appropriate for your child's age).
- 4Show your child the setup, point out one hidden object, and let them explore.
- 5When they're done, store the rice and objects in a sealed container - this can come out again next time.
Success signals
Your child focuses on the rice for at least 10 minutes without needing redirection. They return to the bin multiple times over days or weeks. They invent their own play (pretend cooking, transferring rice between cups, building "mountains")
If it's tricky
Child loses interest in 2-3 minutes: The bin may need more variety - add a new hidden object or a new tool. Child dumps the rice intentionally: Calmly help them pour it back; this is usually a one-time behavior. Child tries to taste the rice (under-3s): Redirect and supervise more closely; the bin may be premature for their stage. Siblings fight over the bin: Split materials into two containers
