What to prep
- cups
- flat_surface
- timer
Play guide
- 1Give your child a small set of identical lightweight cups on a flat surface.
- 2Show a simple pattern, such as stacking three cups into a pyramid and then back into one pile.
- 3Let your child practise the up-and-down pattern slowly until the sequence feels smooth.
- 4Once they know it, let them speed up and see how fast they can complete it.
- 5Add more cups or a longer pattern as they get comfortable.
Success signals
Your child completes the up-and-down pattern in the right order. They get smoother and a little faster with practice. They stay focused and want to beat their last time
If it's tricky
The cups topple constantly: Start with just three cups and slow right down; speed comes after the pattern is smooth. Your child rushes and gets frustrated: Drop the timer and focus on doing it neatly first. They lose interest: Let them invent their own stacking pattern rather than following a set one
