- 1Choose a soft cloth or fabric baby book with high-contrast pictures and crinkly pages, with no small or detachable parts.
- 2Sit your baby comfortably - supported sitting, on your lap, or during tummy time with the book propped open in front of them.
- 3Hand them the book and let them explore however they like, by crinkling, mouthing, patting, and grabbing the pages.
- 4Sit close and gently name the pictures as they land on them ("that's a face", "a bright circle"), following their interest rather than reading front to back.
- 5Let them stay on one page as long as they want; lingering and mouthing is real engagement at this age.
- 6Put it away when they lose interest, and wipe it if it has been mouthed.
Success signals
Your baby holds, crinkles, mouths, and pats the book, and turns toward it with interest. They attend when you name pictures and, over time, look at the pages more and mouth them a little less. They stay calmly engaged for a few minutes.
If it's tricky
Baby only mouths the book: That is completely normal - mouthing is how they explore; keep naming pictures lightly. Baby loses interest fast: Prop the book during tummy time so it doubles as a reach target, or choose one with more contrast or sound. Baby cannot hold the book: Hold it open for them and let them pat the pages.
