- 1Settle the baby safely facing you and offer one soft "ooo" or a familiar greeting.
- 2Wait for a coo, look or movement. Reply with a similarly gentle sound or movement, then leave space for another turn.
- 3Repeat while the baby is interested, following their pace rather than adding louder sounds.
Success signals
Adult and baby share a brief back-and-forth through sound, gaze or movement.
If it's tricky
The baby is not interested in vocal sound: use a smile and a slow hand opening instead.
