Description
Pile pillows and blankets into a small enclosed corner or draped space and add a stack of books. Your child climbs in and looks through books at their own pace - a calm retreat that invites them to stay longer than they would at a table.
What to prep
- cushions
- blanket
- books
Play guide
- 1Pick a corner, the space behind a sofa, or under a table. Drape a blanket over the top to create a low ceiling if your child responds to enclosed spaces.
- 2Lay down cushions, pillows, or a folded blanket on the floor for comfortable sitting or lying.
- 3Add a small stack of 4-8 books - picture books, photo books, or any books your child enjoys. Keep the stack low; too many can feel like a task.
- 4Let your child discover the nook or invite them in gently. No need to stay or read together - leave them to explore.
Success signals
Your child settles in the nook for 10 or more minutes without asking you to join. They return to the nook across multiple days. They choose their own books from the stack and flip through them independently.
If it's tricky
Child wants you inside with them: Sit at the entrance for a few minutes then gradually move away - many children need one settle-in before they're comfortable alone. The nook collapses: Anchor the blanket drape with heavy books or a clip. They treat it as a rough-play space rather than a calm one: Set an expectation at entry - "this is our reading spot, bodies go slow in here." Interest drops after a day: Swap in two or three new books to refresh it.
