Description

One person counts to ten with eyes closed while the other hides. The seeker then searches until they find the hider. Switch roles and repeat. A universal game that works in any home.

Play guide

1Agree on the counting spot - a wall, a chair, or any fixed point. Set clear boundaries for where hiding is allowed (just this room, or the whole floor).
2The seeker covers their eyes and counts to 10 out loud, slowly. The hider finds their spot.
3The seeker calls "ready or not, here I come!" and searches.
4When found, celebrate, then switch roles. Count again, let the child seek.
5For children under 4 who hide in obvious spots: pretend to search in the wrong places before "finding" them with great surprise.

Success signals

Your child chooses a hiding spot independently (even if it's obvious). They stay quietly in their spot until found. They laugh or squeal with delight at being discovered

If it's tricky

Your child under 3 keeps following you or giving away their hiding spot: The game works fine - just play along enthusiastically and make finding them a big event. They're not "failing"; younger children often hide in the same obvious spot every time and love it. Your child gets anxious when it's their turn to seek and can't find you: Give audio clues - a hum, a cough, a small knock - before showing yourself. Hiding in the dark spots frightens a child: Agree that hiding must be in visible, lit areas only

Make it yours

Younger, 2-3 years: Play in one room only. Parent hides in obvious spots and makes small noises to help child find them. The searching is exciting even when the hiding isn't sophisticated. Older, 5-7 years: Increase the play area, add a "home base" where the hider can run to safety if they see the seeker coming. Siblings: One seeks while all others hide at the same time. Lower-stimulation option for children sensitive to surprise, suspense, or sudden discovery: Reduce the drama - seek slowly and narrate as you go ("I'm checking behind the sofa now...") so the child knows when you are getting close. Lower-stimulation option, continued: Avoid jump-scare moments of discovery; approach hiding spots calmly. Lower-stimulation option, continued: Play in one lit room only to avoid dark or enclosed spaces.
