Anticipation Song

Description

You sing a familiar bounce or tickle song and pause right before the fun part, giving your baby a beat to anticipate what is coming and signal for more. A playful, repeatable back-and-forth built on a song they know.

Cost: FreeBest time: Anytime

Play guide

  1. 1Choose a short, familiar song with a clear build-up and a fun peak (a tickle, a gentle bounce, a "boo") and sing it a few times so your baby learns the shape.
  2. 2With your baby settled facing you, sing it again and, this time, pause right before the peak.
  3. 3Hold the pause and wait, watching your baby. Look for a signal that they want the fun part - a wriggle, a sound, a smile, a look.
  4. 4When they signal, deliver the peak warmly (the tickle, bounce, or "boo"), then start again.
  5. 5Keep the game gentle and let them lead the pace; repeat as long as they enjoy it.
  6. 6Stop when your baby looks away, fusses, or tires of the game.

Success signals

Your baby anticipates the peak during the pause - tensing, smiling, wriggling, or making a sound - and shows delight when it arrives. Over time they signal more clearly for "more" and stay engaged across many repeats. They may fill the pause with their own sound.

If it's tricky

Baby does not react to the pause: Sing the whole song a few more times first so the build-up becomes familiar, then try pausing again. Baby gets overexcited or the tickle is too much: Soften the peak and slow down. Baby loses interest: Switch to a different familiar song; the anticipation works with any song that has a clear build and payoff.
