Description
Once per visit, your child asks grandparent one question - about their childhood, their favourite things, or anything that comes to mind. An adult writes the answer in a small notebook. Over time the book fills with stories and memories your child helped gather.
What to prep
- notebook
- pen
Play guide
- 1Keep a small notebook and pen in a consistent place - a drawer near where you usually sit with grandparent works well.
- 2At the start or end of a visit, tell your child it's question time. Let them think of a question to ask grandparent - anything they're curious about. If they're stuck, offer two or three options - "What did you do when you were my age? What's your favourite food? What makes you laugh?"
- 3Child asks. Grandparent answers - as long or as short as they like.
- 4An adult writes the question and answer in the notebook, with the date and who answered. If grandparent is a writer, let them write it themselves.
- 5Close the notebook until next time. Over visits, child can look back at earlier pages.
Success signals
Your child starts thinking of questions between visits: "I want to ask Grandma this next time." Grandparent looks forward to the question and sometimes prepares something to share. Over months, the book becomes something the family returns to together
If it's tricky
Your child can't think of a question: Offer two specific options and let them choose - having a choice is easier than inventing from nothing. Grandparent is shy or brief in their answer: That's fine; short answers are real answers. Grandparent isn't physically present: The question can happen by video call and the adult writes the answer after. Visits are infrequent: The book just fills more slowly - that's fine
