Description
Find a shadow outdoors, mark where it falls with tape or chalk, then come back an hour later to see if it has moved. A slow-reveal observation activity about time and the sun - the waiting is part of the experience.

Play guide
- 1Find an outdoor object with a clear shadow - a post, a pot plant, a toy left outside, or a stick pushed into soil. Choose a time when the sun is casting a sharp shadow (mid-morning or early afternoon work well).
- 2Mark the tip and outline of the shadow with small pieces of tape, a chalk mark, or a small stone. Say - "let's mark where it is right now and come back later."
- 3Go inside or move on with your day. Come back after about an hour.
- 4Compare - is the shadow in the same place? Let your child look and notice before you say anything. "What do you see?"
- 5If the shadow has moved noticeably, mark the new position. Come back again after another hour if interest holds. Over a few hours, the marks tell a story about where the sun has traveled.
Success signals
Your child notices the shadow has moved when you return, without you pointing it out first. They want to mark it again to check later. They ask "why did it move?", showing they understand something caused the change even if they don't know what
If it's tricky
The shadow hasn't moved enough to notice clearly: You may have checked back too soon - wait a full 60 minutes, not 30. It is a cloudy day and there are no clear shadows: This activity cannot run; save it for a sunny day. Child forgets about the shadow and doesn't want to go back outside: That is fine - you can describe what you found without them, or check it yourself and tell the story at dinner. The tape marks are gone (outdoor wind, another family member): Set up fresh marks on the next sunny day
