Description
Read a picture book together and pause at each page to let your child add the sound effects - the animal's call, the weather sound, the engine noise. Your child becomes the sound designer of the story, which makes even a familiar book feel completely new.

- 1Choose a picture book with clear sounds implied on the pages - animals, weather, vehicles, actions.
- 2Begin reading at your usual pace. At the first sound opportunity, stop and say: "What sound does that make?" and wait.
- 3Let your child make the sound - however they interpret it is right. Continue the page, then move on.
- 4Work through the whole book this way. Don't rush; some sounds take a moment to invent.
Success signals
Your child anticipates sound moments before you pause, or asks "can I do the sound?" between pages. They stay engaged through the whole book rather than rushing to turn pages. They want to read the same book again in the same way
If it's tricky
Your child is shy about making sounds: Make the first one yourself - a big exaggerated animal roar - and invite them to copy or improve on yours. They don't know what sound something makes: Treat it as an opening: "What do you think a whale sounds like? Let's invent one." They make sounds continuously without pausing for reading: Embrace it - their engagement is the point. The book has few natural sound moments: Prompt more creatively: "What sound would this tree make in the wind?"
