Play guide

  1. 1Set up a line or ring of chairs facing outward, one fewer than the number of players, in a clear space.
  2. 2Start the music; players walk around the chairs without touching them.
  3. 3Stop the music suddenly; every player finds and sits in a chair.
  4. 4The player left without a seat is out for the next round (or does a fun forfeit and stays in for the no-elimination version).
  5. 5Remove one chair and play again until one player is left.

Success signals

Your child walks around the chairs while the music plays and sits quickly when it stops. They handle sitting out or a forfeit without much upset. They ask for another round.

If it's tricky

Children dive or push for a seat: Slow the walking pace and remind them to sit gently, or swap chairs for floor cushions to soften landings. Being out ends the fun for a young child: Use the cushion version where the odd one out just shares a cushion and nobody leaves. The group is very young: Walk with them and model finding a seat calmly.
